Describe yourself in under 100 words :

I’ve been a classical pianist since I was 5 and joined a rock band at 20. Music has always been the focus for me but in the last year I’ve become addicted to baking and cooking. Thanks to all those cooking shows like Masterchef and Chopped, every meal is a mini challenge. I’m pretty sure my boyfriend and family are also thankful! I like to stay organized, creative, and challenged. Animals will always be dear to my heart and I’m excited for a new little puppy in the winter to come into my life!

RAW Take 3- Kath & Jace 04Why did you decide to participate in the RAW photo shoot?

Being in a band there are many young people listening to our music and seeing us perform live. I’m always done up in my show clothes and makeup. They rarely get to see me natural. I want to show everyone that I’m not always like that, that I’m comfortable without makeup and in sweatpants and baggy shirts. It would be awesome to inspire people to not depend on clothing or makeup and just be who they are. It does take time to accept you for you, especially when we are being thrown into a world that promotes a certain type of “perfection” through advertisements, magazines, movies, and the all-mighty internet.

What surprised you most about the experience?

I was most surprised by my feelings leading up to the photoshoot. I kept thinking, “How’s my skin going to be next week?”, “Should I pluck my eyebrows today, or the day of?”, “Don’t forget moisturizer!”, “How should I style my hair?” etc. Then I realized, what does it matter? Who cares, I just need to be me that day, no matter what.

What is your definition of ‘beautiful’?

I associate beauty with nature. To me the term ‘beautiful’ describes things that are in their natural state. We describe landscapes as beautiful when they are raw and untouched, but for some reason we think our own beauty needs to be touched up with makeup or photoshop. I think the more natural you are, the more comfortable you’ll be. It really does show in social situations. The more you are yourself, the more natural beauty you let into the world.

Have you ever felt like you weren’t beautiful?

Whenever I’m sick, or just having one of those days, I don’t feel my best. Unfortunately this affects my personal feelings towards my beauty. I see things in myself I wouldn’t normally see, but that’s mostly because I’m in a bad mood or don’t feel well, and start to fret the small things.

What things (if any) are you most insecure about?

It sounds really funny, but I get really insecure on stage when I know people in the audience. (Which happens often). I think it’s because they know me personally and I’ll see them again? I don’t know, I feel like they’re watching me closely and I fear I’m going to dance weird. Ha!

jayceQUOTEWhen do you feel most beautiful?

I feel most beautiful when I’m with my friends and family. That’s when I’m the most comfortable and I know they’ll accept me for who I am. I can be as silly as I want and I love being whacky and weird. I don’t feel I need to impress anyone.

Has your appearance ever held you back in life or conversely helped you?

I’ve always been told I’m unique looking because I’m half chinese and half caucasian. ( A “halfie”). But I don’t think that’s really made a difference in my life. I think my personality takes me farther – which is how it should be.

What part of aging scares you the most?

I’m most scared of losing loved ones. I’ve had a couple people who were very dear to me in the last year pass away. I don’t want to have to say goodbye for the last time. But I know that’s life. I have to live it to the fullest and cherish the experiences we have together.

What part of aging is the most exciting?

I’m really looking forward to starting my own family. I know that won’t happen very soon, but I’m at that age where I’m starting to see my friends getting married, and some are even having children! Oh and I’m excited for crows feet! I think they’re cute on older people.

On average how much do you spend each month on cosmetic items such as make-up, hair cuts/ colouring, waxing, clothing, nails, tanning, creams etc.

Well, lately I’ve spent quite a bit more on clothing. But that’s because I’m going through a transition from purchasing casual outfits to splurging a bit more on items that are more mature and will last me years instead of months. I’m thrifty and frugal so it doesn’t get too out of hand. I get my haircut about once or twice a year because I keep it long and it’s quite healthy. When ombre-coloured hair was a big thing last year, I tried bleaching my hair for the first time. It was just my ends, so I felt like it wasn’t damaging my hair as much since my roots weren’t tampered with. But now I appreciate healthy hair (the ends were quite crunchy and there were lots of split ends!) As for makeup, I’ve never been super into it. For the longest time I’d use the free gift makeup that came with my mom’s Clinique makeup purchase. I usually buy department store makeup, and the occasional MAC product.

Circle ShoHave you ever had cosmetic surgery or treatments? Why or why not?

No. I’m against cosmetic surgery for myself. I don’t believe in altering my body.

Who is the most beautiful woman in the world to you and why?

Is it too obvious to answer this question with “My mom”? Well, it’s true. She’s given me the path to the life I love and supported me the whole time. She has raised two children and taken care of our whole extended family. I hope to take care of my family as well as she has with us.

If you woke up every morning feeling confident, content and proud of your natural appearance (before putting on make-up, doing your hair, getting dressed etc.) how would your world be different? What would that feel like? Would your day unfold differently?

I’m proud to say I’m more confident now going without makeup than I was a couple years ago. I’m not sure what started it, but I usually don’t really wear makeup unless it’s going out for dinner or playing a show. I think it’s probably because I’ve realized how much our skin needs to breathe. The more untouched it is, the less makeup you need to apply because it clears up quite well. I like the way I feel when I’m content without wearing makeup. It also saves me a ton of time in the morning.
