Describe yourself in under 100 words:

I am a curious and truth seeking woman on a mission to shift the consciousness in young women. I love strong coffee, good red wine, rap music and the forest. I run a company called Girlvana Yoga that is devoted to teen girls learning to meditate and do yoga as well as co-own a movement studio in North Van, called Distrikt Movement. I am committed to community, honesty and waking people up.

Why did you decide to participate in the RAW photo shoot?

The image of woman is so skewed and on some level we all suffer from trying to be the modified images we see in the media. Actually, it is beyond the media now, all we have to do is open our phones and see filtered selfies in good lighting to feel bad about ourselves. So I wanted to put out a real image of myself and true reflection of what I look like.

What surprised you most about the experience?

How quickly we all went to “ OMG, of course I broke out the night before…” Why is it so shocking to not wear makeup? I guess it made me realize how much we all rely on it and when we don’t wear it we have to point out our flaws for fear of someone doing it to us first.

What is your definition of ‘beautiful’?

Honesty and vulnerability- there is nothing more beautiful.

Have you ever felt like you weren’t beautiful?

Of course.

What things (if any) are you most insecure about?

I get insecure if my skin is bad, or if someone posts an unflattering photo of me, normal girl stuff.

When do you feel most beautiful?

In the eyes of someone who loves me unconditionally.

Has your appearance ever held you back in life or conversely helped you?  Explain.

I come from the dance world where it can sometimes be more about what you look like and less about how talented you are. It mattered in auditions if I was the right height or hair colour to book the job or not. In yoga not so much, in fact the less make up and fluff the more seriously I am taken.

What part of aging scares you the most?

The 2+ day hangovers and the saggy boobs, other than that bring it on.

What part of aging is the most exciting?

Being wise and badass. I have watched other women in my life fight aging and I think it is such a shame. We need to embrace each stage of our lives as we were intended. I think we have lost how important it is to honour our elders and the wisdom the posses.

On average how much do you spend each month on cosmetic items such as make-up, hair cuts/colouring, waxing, clothing, nails, tanning, creams etc.?

I have become so much more low maintenance than my early twenties. My biggest splurge would be clothes. I haven’t died my hair in almost a year.

Have you ever had cosmetic surgery or treatments?

No. I’ve never wanted to interfere with the way I was intedned to be. Not because I am in love with my appearance, but I just trust that this was how I was supposed to show up in this life this time around.

Who is the most beautiful woman in the world to you and why?

Any teen girl I come across who is on the edge of stepping into womanhood. She will always be the most beautiful thing to me. Innocent, earnest, full of wonder.

If you woke up every morning feeling confident, content and proud of your natural appearance (before putting on make-up, doing your hair, getting dressed etc.) how would your world be different?  What would that feel like? Would your day unfold differently?

I am sure I would be more productive and less caught up about what my hair looks like after yoga.

If you could give a 16-year old girl a piece of advice in regards to beauty, confidence or self love what would you say?

The energy you direct to feeling bad about yourself or lesser than is the biggest waste of time and a selfish pursuit.  Direct your time and energy to making an impact, to expressing yourself creatively and giving love.
